Welcome to a website of useful information for persons with vision impairment.

Desert Low Vision Services is committed to elevating each low vision individual’s ability to function independently. An important low vision evaluation can be scheduled for those individuals interested in focusing on their specific needs.

We also have on site, an extensive selection of adaptive aids available to you in a retail setting. Click on Vision Aids.

Vision loss can occur at any time, to anyone. Vision loss in older adults has many causes:  Macular Degeneration, Glaucoma, Cataracts, or Stroke to name just few. Diabetes, Retinitis Pigmentosa, or accidents can cause reduced vision in working-age adults. Cortical Visual Impairment, Retinopathy of Prematurity, Optical Nerve Atrophy, Albinism and Juvenile Diabetes may cause vision loss in children.

To better understand various causes of vision loss, check out the links listed under Resources.

It Takes Desire, Determination, and Willingness to Accept a New Way of Seeing

Vision is the most complex of our senses;  made up of acuity (sharpness of detail), color sense, the ability to see contrast, and the ability to locate objects in space. Loss of vision at any time can be a terrible disability.

Our purpose as low vision specialists is to maximize remaining vision by making it function more effectively as well as emphasize the individual’s role in their own rehabilitation. We reinforce the individual’s responsibility to advocate for themselves and learn successful ways to achieve independence at home, work, or school.

Desert Low Vision Services provides a non-threatening place for visually impaired individuals to go in order to take that next step in learning about their vision loss. We have firsthand information and resources, adaptive aids, and useful techniques to inspire confidence.

How do you know if low vision services are appropriate for you?

Because of your vision, do you have difficulty:

  • Reading the newspaper or other fine print, even while wearing glasses?
  • Identifying signs, objects in the distance, viewing television?
  • Moving around your home or environment confidently and safely?
  • Identifying money or paying bills?
  • With glare, light sensitivity, and adjustment to various light levels?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, or if vision problems are interfering with your independence in daily activities, ability to work, or to be successful, Desert Low Vision Services can help.
