Vision loss can occur at any time, to anyone. Vision loss in older adults has many causes: Macular Degeneration, Glaucoma, Cataracts, or Stroke to name just few. Diabetes, Retinitis Pigmentosa, or accidents can cause reduced vision in working-age adults. Cortical Visual Impairment, Retinopathy of Prematurity, Optical Nerve Atrophy, Albinism and Juvenile Diabetes may cause vision loss in children.

It Takes Desire, Determination, and Willingness to Accept a New Way of Seeing
Vision is the most complex of our senses; made up of acuity (sharpness of detail), color sense, the ability to see contrast, and the ability to locate objects in space. Loss of vision at any time can be a terrible disability.
Our purpose as low vision specialists is to maximize remaining vision by making it function more effectively as well as emphasize the individual’s role in their own rehabilitation. We reinforce the individual’s responsibility to advocate for themselves and learn successful ways to achieve independence at home, work, or school.
Desert Low Vision Services provides a non-threatening place for visually impaired individuals to go in order to take that next step in learning about their vision loss. We have firsthand information and resources, adaptive aids, and useful techniques to inspire confidence.
